Why Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy? (OMT)

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is awareness and neurological re-education exercises to assist the normalization of the oral structures and function.Before  photos.  Initial concerns expressed were relapse from orthodontic treatment, chronic mouth breathing, chapped lips and incorrect tongue rest and swallowing habits. After Myofunctional Therapy she retrained her oral facial habits to become a nasal breather, tongue rest on roof of mouth and lip seal.  As well she eliminated her tongue thrust swallow.

What are the main problems related to Orofacial Myofunctional Dysfunctions (OMD)?  The main problems with OMD’s are alterations in breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech, as well as the position of the lips and tongue.  Signs of OMD can be seen in the appearance of open bite occlusion, flaring of anterior teeth, chapped lips or lip tension when swallowing, and speech concerns.

The Orofacial Myologist works in collaboration with your health care team to evaluate the functions of the muscles of the lips, tongue, cheeks and face.

Benefits of OMT are elimination of habits like finger or thumb sucking and elimination of tongue thrust swallow.  The goal of OMT is proper nasal breathing, swallowing, chewing and  healthy oral rest posture, which is nasal breathing, tongue resting  on the palate and lips together.

The first step is to understand how theses habits began and why the are still occurring.  Awareness in a positive, empowering  environment is important to gain the cooperation of the child.  Individualized goals are determined  with activities and exercise to reach the desired results in a timely manor.
